Panorama Palms

After purchasing this 3-bedroom mid-century ranch house, the owners called us in to take a look at how we could improve on what was there, and then furnish it to create an attractive vacation home. We were immediately impressed by the home’s unobstructed and panoramic views of the magnificent San Jacinto mountains. This led us to develop the name “Panorama Palms” to market the home, along with the distinctly 60s brand design, which also matched our vision for the interior.

From a remodel point of view, we eliminated all the grey walls in the living areas and blue walls in the master bedroom. The master bathroom had also previously undergone some sort of remodel that was not in keeping with the style of the home and so we started again there, creating a bathroom far more in keeping with the home’s past and now ongoing aesthetic.

We also created an entrance foyer by installing a totally groovy walnut room divider. This also allowed us to reconfigure the lounge room and have it orientated towards the wall of glass sliders and that magnificent view. Under the high vaulted ceiling we placed a huge mid-century styled curved yellow sofa, complemented by a retro-looking orange armchair and ottoman, oversized original vintage table lamp, and wooden tables, all placed on a bright rug that completed the colorful retro scene. The TV was then mounted on the original mid-century fireplace, while a retro-styled record player and stand completed the picture.

On the other side of the fireplace, the dining area received a round 6-seater wooden table with acccompanying blue trimmed chairs, sitting under the new blue glass sputnik-style light fitting. The adjacent kitchen’s white cabinets and terrazzo style countertops were given a splash of color and some interest by the addition of a fun, bright and retro-looking wallpaper “backsplash” that really brought out those mid-century vibes.

When it came to the bedrooms, the master was dubbed “The Sunset Suite” and received a makeover of warm orange hues inspired by the desert sunsets that can be viewed through its west-facing sliders. We furnished with mid-century style wooden pieces and added the breeze block wallpaper to bring the retro feel to the fore. The previously mentioned en-suite bathroom had a complete “mid-century” makeover with white and wood twin vanities, circular mirrors, retro brass lighting, and a standout new shower with brightly colored mosaic tiles.

Meanwhile, the “Sand Room” bedroom was inspired by the desert sands with its yellow king bed and palm tree design wallpaper setting the vivid yellow scene. Inspired by the clear and bright desert skies, the adjacent “Sky Room” bedroom was colored in a variety of blues including its groovy aqua geometric wallpaper and velvet bed.

Heading outside, with those impressive 180º views as a backdrop, we added pendant lighting under the patio cover and a large 10-seater dining table with bright yellow chairs that paired nicely with the pool umbrellas. The glamorous yellow umbrellas themselves combining nicely with the aqua-cushioned sun lounges to create some real luxurious “Old Hollywood” vibes.

We also placed a fire pit up one end of the pool, and kept the yellow theme going with the “Acapulco” style chairs giving guests the perfect spot for taking in the stars on those cool and clear desert nights.

The vision behind Panorama Palms was to create a step back in time and the perfect Palm Springs vacation from the past, and we couldn’t be happier with what was a beautiful and breath-taking end result.
